Gwynedd Mercy favored in CSAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll

ASTON, Pa. – Gwynedd Mercy University was selected by the coaches in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) to capture the 2016-17 Women’s Basketball championship.

In the preseason coaches’ poll, in which coaches were permitted to vote for themselves, Gwynedd Mercy received 131 points and four first-place votes from the conference’s 12 head coaches.

“I am happy for our women’s basketball program that the coaches in the CSAC have honored us with this ranking,” said Gwynedd Mercy head coach Keith Mondillo. “We are all looking forward to a competitive season in conference play and in the conference tournament.”

Last season, the Griffins went 20-6 overall with a 14-2 mark in conference play. Gwynedd Mercy lost in the semifinals of the CSAC playoffs to eventual champion Cabrini University, 67-56.

Cabrini was just two points behind Gwynedd Mercy, as the Cavaliers had 129 points and four first place votes. Neumann University was third with 121 points, followed by Marywood University with 119 points and four first-place votes. Cabrini won the 2015-16 CSAC title over Neumann by a 74-64 score, and then advanced to the NCAA tournament. The Cavaliers lost to Marymount University in the first round by a 60-49 score.

Fifth place went to Centenary University with 88 points, followed by Rosemont College in sixth place with 86 points.

Seventh place went to Immaculata University with 80 points, followed by Keystone College (56 points), Cairn University (40), Notre Dame of Maryland University (36), Cedar Crest College (27) and Clarks Summit University (23)

The 2016-17 season opens on Tuesday, November 15 with the first CSAC contests slated for Wednesday, November 30.
