CSAC Announces 2017-18 Men's Basketball End of Season Awards
ASTON, Pa. – The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) has announced its 2017-18 men’s basketball end of season awards, as voted upon by the league’s ten head coaches. These awards include Player, Defensive and Rookie of the Year as well as Coach of the Year.
For the second straight year, Cabrini University senior forward
Tyheim Monroe was named as the CSAC Player of the Year. Monroe joins a long line of Cabrini players who have earned this honor, and is the first back-to-back recipient of the award since former Cabrini standout Aaron Walton-Moss won the award three straight seasons (2012-15). He is the fourth player in school history to win the award (Walton-Moss, Corey Lemons, Kevin Misevicius). Monroe wrote his name into the record books, as he became the CSAC’s all-time leader in rebounds with 1,440 heading into the postseason. His 387 rebounds this season, which leads the CSAC, is fourth best all-time in a season. Monroe holds the second best and third best single season rebounding totals in CSAC history. He also leads the conference in scoring at 21.8 points per game. He had a season-high 31 points in a win over Immaculata and a season-high 28 rebounds in a win over Centenary. Of his 25 games this season, he netted a double-double in all but two of them. Nationally, he ranks first in rebounds per game (15.8) and first in double-doubles with 22. His average of 11.33 defensive rebounds per game leads all of Division III. He is 49 points away from becoming the sixth player in CSAC history to reach 2,000 points, and is Cabrini’s all-time leading scorer.
Neumann University freshman forward
Aaron Johnson-Chavis was named as both the 2017-18 Defensive Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year by the coaches. Chavis had an outstanding first season for the Knights, as he is second on the team in points per game with 14.7. He averages just under ten rebounds a game (9.9) and has a team and conference-best 68 blocks on the season. He had a season-high 23 points in a win over Cabrini on January 22, and then grabbed 20 rebounds in a win over Keystone on January 27. A two-time CSAC Defensive Player of the Week selection, Chavis is the third Neumann University player to earn Rookie of the Year honors (Mark Blount, DeShawn Lowman) and is the second straight Knight to win Defensive Player of the Year (Darian Barnes).
The 2017-18 Coach of the Year award went to
Tim McDonald of Cabrini University. This marks the first time McDonald has been honored by his peers, and is the third Cabrini coach to win the award (John Dzik, Marcus Kahn). This season, McDonald led the Cavs to the top-seed in the CSAC Playoffs, finishing with a mark of 22-3 overall and 16-2 in the CSAC. In his fourth season, the 22 wins are a team-best under McDonald.
