CSAC Announces Baseball End of Year Awards
ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) has announced its 2019 Baseball End of Year Awards. These awards including All-CSAC (First-Team, Second-Team, Honorable Mention and All-Sportsmanship), Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of Year. Also, one team was honored with the 3-D Award.
Players were nominated by their coaches and the team was voted on by the six coaches in the conference, who were not allowed for their own teams.
Player of the Year honors went to Keystone senior infielder
Chris Panzarella (Hazle Township, PA./Hazleton). It’s the second straight year that a Keystone player has won this award, and Panzarella becomes the fourth player in Keystone to be named Player of the Year (Mohammed Hussein, 2018; Lymbel Guerrero, 2014; Esteban Meletiche, 2010-12). A first-team All-CSAC selection, Panzarella leads the Giants in batting with a .417 average. He has a team-high 53 hits, with 37 runs scored and 21 RBI. He is also a team best 22-for-23 in stolen bases.
Pitcher of the Year honors went to Keystone sophomore
Nathan Hinkley (Bradeton, Fla./Saint Lucie West Centennial). Hinkley is the ninth straight pitcher from Keystone to win the honor, since the award was introduced in 2011. In nine games, he is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA. He has struck out 36 batters to go along with allowing just 13 earned runs in 33.2 innings of work. In 25 innings pitched in conference play, he allowd just five earned runs. He was a first-team All-CSAC selection.
There were co-Rookies of the Year for 2019, as Cairn University freshman outfielder
Caleb Edman (Nokesville, Va./Northern Virginia CC) and Wilson starting pitcher
Kevin Ehrman (York, Pa./Central York) shared the honor. Edman is the first Cairn player to win the honor since Caleb Lang in 2013, while this is Wilson’s first honoree. Edman, a first-team All-CSAC selection, is averaging .333 with 39 hits and 26 runs scored. He also has 31 RBI, which is second-best on the team. He is 17-for-20 in stolen bases.
Ehrman, in Wilson’s first year as a varsity program, was a second-team selection at starting pitcher. In ten appearances, he started eight games. He finished the year with a team-best 6-1 record and had a 2.25 ERA. In 40 innings, he has a team-best 39 strikeouts with 14 walks. He allowed just ten earned runs.
Coach of the Year honors went to
Phill Shallenberger. He is the first Cairn coach to win the award in baseball. In his third year, he led the Highlanders to the CSAC playoffs for the first time in school history. Cairn finished 10-5 in the CSAC, and are currently 19-20 heading into Wednesday’s playoff game.
Finally, Clarks Summit University won the 3-D Award. Implemented for the 2011-12 academic year, the Colonial States Athletic Conference 3D Award replaced the CSAC Team Sportsmanship Award. The 3D Award recognizes the teams in each sport that best demonstrate the NCAA Division-III philosophy of "Discover, Develop, Dedicate." The 3D Award was conceived and developed by the CSAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). This is the second straight year Clarks Summit has won the award.
