CSAC Announces 2021 Women's Lacrosse End of Year Awards
ROSEMONT, Pa. – The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) has announced its 2021 Women’s Lacrosse End of Year Awards. These awards included All-CSAC (First-Team, Second-Team and All-Sportsmanship), Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of Year. Also, one team was honored with the 3-D Award.
Players were nominated by their coaches and the teams were voted on by the six coaches in the conference, who were not allowed to vote for their own teams.
Player of the Year honors went to Bryn Athyn junior attack Payton Gormley (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Abington). Gormley is the first Bryn Athyn women’s lacrosse student-athlete to win the award. This year, Gormley led the team with 23 goals and 32 points. Her 23 goals on the season are tied for the conference lead. A First-Team All-CSAC selection, she ranks second on the team in assists with nine and has 13 ground balls.
Defensive Player of the Year honors went to Notre Dame of Maryland University senior defender Michaela Seay (Towson, Md./Loch Raven). Seay is the first Gator to win the Defensive Player of the Year award in women’s lacrosse since the award was introduced during the 2016 season. A first-team All-CSAC selection, Seay led a defensive unit that gave up just 3.8 goals per game this season. She posted a season-high six caused turnovers in a win over Wilson back on April 7.
Rookie of the Year honors went to Notre Dame of Maryland sophomore midfielder Sara Morales (Joppa, Md./Catholic). She is the fourth Gator to win the award and the second straight to do so, joining Julie Hagis who won the award in the 2019 season.
Due to the cancellation of the Spring 2020 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CSAC is allowing any first or second-year student who is in their first year of competition in their respective sport to be considered for the Rookie of the Year award.
Morales, a first-team All-CSAC selection, is second on the team in goals with 23 and points with 37 but leads the Gators in assists with 15.
Coach of the Year honors went to Notre Dame of Maryland head coach Karl-Lei Berry. She is the first Notre Dame of Maryland coach to win the honor in women’s lacrosse. In her first full season (2020 season was cut short due to the pandemic), she led the Gators to a 5-0 record in conference play and the top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
The 3-D Award went to Wilson College. Implemented for the 2011-12 academic year, the Colonial States Athletic Conference 3D Award replaced the CSAC Team Sportsmanship Award. The 3D Award recognizes the teams in each sport that best demonstrate the NCAA Division-III philosophy of "Discover, Develop, Dedicate." The 3D Award was conceived and developed by the CSAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). This marks the first time Wilson has won the award in women’s lacrosse.
