CSAC Announces Softball End-of-Year Awards for 2023
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) is proud to announce the 2023 All-CSAC Softball team. The team, composed of players from all nine CSAC institutions that sponsor softball, was voted upon by the coaches in the league.
The team includes All-CSAC honorees as well as Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Coach of the Year, and All-Sportsmanship honorees. The student-athletes were nominated by their coaches and voted upon by the conference’s nine head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
Player of the Year went to Rosemont senior
Lauren Begg (New Hope, PA / Council Rock North HS). The outfielder/pitcher was all over the CSAC leaderboards both at the plate and in the circle. Offensively, Begg hit .548 on the season; good for 2
nd overall in all of NCAA Division III Softball. Begg also had 70 hits during the season, leading the CSAC and ranked 5
th nationally in addition to a .562 On-Base Percentage, which is 11
th nationally as well. The 38 total stolen bases lead the CSAC and is 7
th nationally while the 1.00 Stolen Base per Game is 8
th nationally. Begg also led the CSAC in Runs Scored (44), Slugging Percentage (.722) and OPS (1.293). In the circle, Begg picked up 11 wins, 6 in conference, throwing 102.1 innings with a 3.76 ERA.
Pitcher of the Year went to
Corinne Mundy (Philadelphia, PA / The Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush) from Cedar Crest. The junior followed up her Honorable Mention nod in 2022 with a First Team and Pitcher of the Year performance in 2023. This season, Mundy led the CSAC in Innings Pitched (199.0) and was credited as the pitcher of record for every Cedar Crest victory, finishing with 17 total Wins on the year including all 14 victories in CSAC play as the Falcons finished 14-2 in conference play and hosted the postseason tournament as the #1 seed. Mundy finished the season as the national leader in Complete Games (30) and Games Started (33).
Maddison Atkins (Madisonville, TN / Sequoyah HS) from Clarks Summit was named Rookie of the Year. Atkins had an impactful first season for the Defenders in the circle, finishing Top 5 in the following categories for CSAC pitchers: Strikeouts (4
th, 91), Strikeouts Looking (2
nd; 37), Opponents Batting Average (.293), and Innings Pitched (104.2). Atkins also picked up all five CSAC Wins in the circle as the Defenders had the most conference victories since 2017 then they had six league wins.
Coach of the Year was awarded to
Bill Higley from
Clarks Summit University. This is the second CSAC Coach of the Year honor for Higley, who previously won the award in 2010 and has coached at Clarks Summit since 2002. This season, the Defenders finished with a 14-20 overall record (5-9 CSAC). The five CSAC victories were the most conference wins since 2017 when the Defenders had six league wins.
