2002 PAC Softball Coaches Preseason Poll
PAC Softball Coaches Tab Cabrini to Three-peat
Aston, PA -- Cabrini College is expected to win its third straight Pennsylvania Athletic Conference softball championship, according to the PAC pre-season coach's poll.
Cabrini was 42-5 a year ago, including a 21-1 mark in the PAC. The Cavaliers of rookie head coach Karen Pelkey received eight of a possible 12 first place votes for a total of 117 points.
"I am flattered we were selected as the pre-season favorite, especially with some of the players we lost since last season," said Pelkey. "The PAC gets stronger every year, so this is a nice honor to have. But, winning the Conference will definitely be a challenge."
College Misericordia, the PAC runner-up each of the last three seasons, was picked second with 132 points, including three first place votes. Gwynedd-Mercy received one first place vote and is third with 124 points while Wesley is fourth with 102. Arcadia is fifth with 96 points and Alvernia rounds out the top six with 88 points.

Wednesday, May 1, 2002 @ Highest Seed (Single Elimination)
Game 1: #6 Arcadia 5, @ #3 Alvernia 1
Arcadia University (21-16) junior Kristi Hutchinson went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament First Round Softball game at Alvernia (23-15), but that one hit left the yard with the bases loaded in the first inning to give classmate Tiffany Rupp all she would need as the Scarlet Knights advanced with a 5-1 win over Alvernia.
Alvernia, the #3 seed in the tournament, recorded outs in the first on a pair of fielder's choice grounders before Hutchinson hit Lauren Berger's 1-0 offering out for a quick 4-0 lead. Alvernia loaded the bases in the first, but failed to score as Rupp induced a groundball from cleanup hitter Stacey Puzauskas and an inning-ending double play ball off the bat of sophomore outfielder Chris Reich. Arcadia, seeded sixth, added a fifth run in the sixth on two hits, a walk, and one Alvernia error. Senior centerfielder Natalie Cardone sparked some life for the Crusaders leading off the sixth with a single and taking second on an error. Cardone took third on Becky Beisel's groundout, and scored on another error.
Game 2: #5 Gwynedd-Mercy 6, @ #4 Wesley 2
The Wesley College (18-19) softball team fell to Gwynedd Mercy College (19-10) 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament. The Wolverines entered the contest as the number four seed, earning the right to host the first round.
Gwynedd jumped on top of Wesley early, scattering four hits in the first two innings to lead 2-0. The Wolverines would mount a comeback, scoring one run in both the third and the fourth inning to pull within one. Wesley's fielding errors would be the difference late in the contest, allowing three more runs in the top of the sixth.
The Wolverines last chance would come in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs and bases loaded, Kim Smith would strike out swinging to end the contest. Gwynedd's Michelle Beaver picked up the win over Wesley by allowing only three hits over seven innings and striking out four. The Griffins were led in hitting by Kelly Loyer, Jodie Sienko and Nicole Klimowicz each with two. Wesley's Denee Mayhew, Samantha Sanders and Billie Hrupsa each added a hit.

In the Western Maryland contest, the Lady Gulls avenged an earlier loss in the tournament, scoring twice in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead. Both runs came as a result of back-to-back throwing errors on Western Maryland shortstop Kim Camponelli.
Against Cabrini (37-8), Salisbury scored both their runs on steals of home plate, with both coming on the back end of double steals. The second one came in the bottom of the sixth inning and snapped a 1-1 tie. Cabrini's Megan Johnston was the hard-luck loser, allowing just four hits in six innings of work.

ECAC TOURNAMENT
Saturday, May 11, 2002 at Montclair State University (Semifinal)
Game 1: Montclair State University 7, Alvernia 6 (11 innings)
Game 3: Drew 6, Alvernia 5 (11 innings) (Alvernia eliminated)
Friday, May 10, 2002- 1st Round @ Alvernia (24-15) 1, Franklin & Marshall (17-15) 0 (F&M eliminated)
Junior pitcher Lauren Berger scattered seven hits and struck out three batters as the Alvernia College softball team defeated Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in nine innings Friday afternoon in the first round of the 2002 Eastern University Athletic Conference (ECAC) South Region Softball Championships at Alvernia.
Junior first baseman B.J. Hostler, the only repeat hitter for Alvernia, chased home junior shortstop Jess Yeastadt with a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth for the only run of the game. Junior Kerry McAuliffe took the loss for the Diplomats going 8.2 innings surrendering just one run on five hits, striking out three.
F&M threatened in the first with a pair of singles but Berger threw two flyouts to get out of the inning unscathed. Alvernia managed just one two-out single in the first and went quietly again in the second. Senior centerfielder Natalie Cardone sparked the Crusaders' first threat with another two-out single in the third and stole second in front of a walk to senior Becky Beisel, but McAuliffe retired Danielle Carroll to end the threat. Neither team managed more than a single baserunner over the next three innings before F&M put two runners on again with one out in the seventh. Berger induced another flyout and kept the Dips off the board striking out designated hitter Brianne Powers.
Hostler brought the home fans to their feet in the bottom of the seventh roping a one-out double to left, but McAuliffe made a game-saving play snagging a line drive off Berger's bat before retiring junior Carla Orris of a foul pop to the catcher. Berger ran into a bit of trouble with one out in the eighth when sophomore Jen Fried laced her third hit of the game, a triple, into the rightfield corner, but Berger fielded Laura DePalma's bunt attempt and threw home to get Fried and keep the game scoreless.
The Crusaders went quickly in the bottom of the eighth and Berger retired the Dips in order in the top of the ninth. Alvernia was a strike away from going quietly in the ninth before Yeastadt ripped a one-hop triple off the centerfield fence setting up Hostler's line single that sent the Crusaders into round two and a match up with top seeded Montclair State Saturday morning at 10 in Montclair, New Jersey
