NCAA Tournament- 1st Round- Wednesday, May 8, 2002
@ Cabrini (15-4) 12, College of Wooster (12-6) 11

Kelli Romano scored six goals and Nicole Schulz added four, as Cabrini College defeated The College of Wooster, 12-11, in the first round of the NCAA Division III women¹s lacrosse tournament. The win was the Lady Cavs' first NCAA victory in three tries.

Romano scored the Cavaliers first five goals of the game, with four coming in the game's first eight minutes, as Cabrini jumped out to a 4-1lead. The Lady Fighting Scots responded with a pair of goals, off the sticks of Miriam Esber and Ashley Arnold to creep within one with 20:04 remaining in the opening stanza.

Romano's fifth goal of the half, with 9:11 remaining, ignited a five-goal spurt by the Lady Cavaliers. Schulz became the second Lady Cav to find the net four minutes later, and Romano added her sixth goal of the half 38 seconds later. Sophomore Missy Modesti and senior Melissa McDonough finished off the 5-0 run, as Cabrini took a 9-3 lead into the break.

As strong as Cabrini finished the first half, Wooster came out stronger in the second half, scoring four quick goals to draw within two, 9-7. Erica Frazier-Young got the scoring started 2:47 into the half, and Beth Hemminger sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by Emily White to get the Fighting Scots back into the game just 5:16 into the stanza.

Freshman Jamie Knobler made a few big stops for Cabrini, and Schulz answered with a pair of goals to give Cabrini a four-goal cushion. However, Wooster had one more run in them. After Hemminger and Schulz exchanged goals to make it 12-8 Cabrini, Frazier-Young ripped off three straight goals to bring the Scots within one, 12-11, with 7:11 to play.

Cabrini successfully chewed up most of the clock, and Wooster got one final shot off in desperation, but Cabrini hung on for the win.

Knobler made 10 saves for Cabrini in the win. Wooster goaltender Kim Christensen kept her team in the game with 16 saves on the day.

Romano's third goal of the day gave her 100 points on the season. She is the first Lady Cavalier to accomplish that feat in team history.
