2003-03 Women's Basketball Pre-Season Coaches' Poll

PAC Women's Basketball Coaches Pick Gwynedd-Mercy

Aston, PA -- Gwynedd-Mercy is expected to regain the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference championship, according to the 2002-03 pre-season women’s basketball coach’s poll.

The Griffins of head coach Keith Mondillo earned 66 points and six of 12 first place votes and is a slight favorite over defending champion and PAC North Division rival Alvernia. The Crusaders compiled 65 points, including five first place votes.

“I’m honored and flattered that the PAC coaches pick us to win the league when our defending champion is ranked 11th in the nation,” said Mondillo, whose team has made five consecutive appearances in the PAC title game, including back-to-back championships in 1999-00 and 2000-01. “This poll is a testament to the strength of our league.”

Cabrini is favored to win the South Division with 61 points and received one first place vote. Eastern, the PAC South regular season champion a year ago, is picked second with 56 points. Wesley is third with 46 point while Neumann, Rosemont and Immaculata round out the poll.

In the North, Misericordia is third with 47 points while Marywood is fourth with 34 points followed by Arcadia and Cedar Crest.

#3 Misericordia 66, #2 Alvernia 55

Senior forward Sandy Olm scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-7 shooting to lead the third seeded Misericordia University women's Basketball team to a 66-55 win over No. 2 Alvernia Thursday evening in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) semifinal at the Physical Education Center (PEC).

Freshman reserve Emily Sauck scored 16 points for the Cougars (19-8) and senior point guard Leslie Livingstone had 15 points to go with six assists and five steals. The three leading Cougars combined for an impressive 19-for-29 performance from the floor. Alvernia (17-9) got 12 points apiece from starters Trish O'Gurek and Jen Sawyer.

Misericordia will travel to No. 1 Gwynedd-Mercy on Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. final. The Griffins (18-8) advanced to the Championship with a 66-37 win over No. 5 Neumann (15-12).

Alvernia built an early 14-7 lead in the first half on the strength of three 3s from three different players and pushed the lead up to 21-12 at the 10:22 mark following McIntyre's second 3 of the half and a driving layup from Steph Durante. Miseri took a timeout and returned inspired as they rattled off seven straight over the next 3:34 to cut the lead down to two. Olm scored the first six for the Cougars on the run and following a Durante jumper, Olm started another run with a 3-point play on the break. Corrigan hit a jumper on the next trip for the Cougars and when the dust settled Misericorida had run off 13 straight to take a 32-23 lead with 54 seconds left on the clock. O'Gurek hit a pair of free throws to stop the run, but Livingstone pushed it back to nine with a layup before a 3 from Amanda Yost cut the Miseri advantage to six at the half, 34-28.

Livingstone put the Cougars back up nine with a free throw and a jumper and the lead remained nine following another Livingstone layup at 16:48. O'Gurek hit a free throw and Kacie Androsko a short jumper as Alvernia clawed its way to within four at 44-40 with 13:46 to play. Alvernia got as close as three points with the ball, but couldn't complete the comeback as the Cougars dropped in 12 unanswered to take a 59-44 lead with 4:31 to play. The lead grew to as many as 16 for the guests and stayed above seven for the remainder of the game as the Cougars, the only conference team to win this season at the PEC, advanced to the final with their second straight win at Alvernia.
