Grilo named Wesley Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

Mark Grilo, who has served as Wesley College's acting men’s lacrosse coach since the death of Dave Reynolds, has been named head coach.

College President Dr. Scott D. Miller and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Michele Stabley notified the team of the decision at 4 p.m. today.

“The passing of Dave Reynolds was devastating to the campus community,” Dr. Miller said. “Coach Reynolds brought so much to our program. In a time of extreme adversity, Coach Grilo has demonstrated tremendous leadership.”

Stabley said, “In his two years as the Wesley Assistant Coach Grilo has displayed all of the finest qualities we want in a head coach. His performance under difficult circumstances proved beyond a doubt that he was the right person for the job.”

Grilo led the Wolverines to a 3-1 record during the final four games of the season, the only loss coming to Cabrini (PA) College in the PAC Championship Game. Wesley finished 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the PAC.

In 2001-02, his first season as a Wolverine assistant, Grilo helped guide Wesley to a 7-7 finish (4-4 and runner up in the PAC). Serving as defensive coordinator, he coached a defensive unit that averaged only 8.93 goals-against per game.

A four-year starter at goalie and two-year captain at Drew University, Grilo holds the University’s all-time saves record. He led Drew to two ECAC Championships (1998-1999) and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player in 1998 for his school record 32-save performance in a 13-11 victory over King's Point.

Grilo was twice named All-Conference and was team MVP in 1999.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Drew University and will complete the master of business administration at Wesley this summer.

PAC Mourns Loss of Wesley Head Coach David Reynolds

Aston, PA -- The Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) mourns the passing of Wesley Head Men's Lacrosse Coach David Reynolds over the weekend.

In his honor, all remaining PAC men's lacrosse contests, regular season and tournament, will conduct a moment of silence.

A local product from Caesar Rodney High School, Reynolds was named head coach of Wesley’s successful men’s lacrosse program in December, 2002.

Reynolds spent the last three seasons at the helm of the St. Mark’s High School (Wilmington, DE) varsity boy’s lacrosse program. During his tenure, he brought the Spartans from a 7-9 record in 2001 to a 15-5 season in 2002 that included a state playoff championship appearance (his second playoff appearance in three years). Reynolds’ efforts last season also earned him Delaware High School Coach of the Year honors. In three seasons with the Spartans, he compiled a record of 33-20.

A former player and graduate of the University of Delaware with a degree in health and exercise science in 2000, Reynolds also served as a teacher as well as an assistant wrestling coach for St. Mark’s.

Reynolds also served as Director of Intramurals at Wesley College in his short tenure at the Dover school.

While at Caesar Rodney, he was an All-State performer in football, wrestling and lacrosse, graduating in 1996. Also that year, Reynolds was Delaware Boys' Player of the Year and an All-American, leading the Riders to a state title.

Mark Grilo, an assistant on the team for two seasons, has been named the interim head coach.

Memorial services to celebrate Reynolds' life will be at 1 p.m. Thursday on the beach at the Rehoboth Beach Patrol Headquarters, Baltimore Avenue, where the family will receive friends two hours earlier.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions either to the Rehoboth Beach Patrol Donation Fund in memory of David Reynolds, Attention: Beach Patrol, P.O. Box C, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; or to The Dave Reynolds Lacrosse Fund at Wesley College, President's Office, 120 N. State St., Dover, DE 19904.

Letters of condolences may be written at www.delmarvaobits.com or www.pippinfuneralhome.com.

Jim Ricardo Named Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Misericordia

Jim Ricardo of Binghamton, NY has been named head men's lacrosse coach at College Misericordia, athletics director Dr. Michael Mould has announced.

A graduate of Cortland State University, Ricardo previously served as an assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan College.

"I'm pleased to welcome Jim Ricardo as our men's lacrosse coach," said Mould. "Jim has an impressive background as a player and a coach. He possesses the experience and energy level necessary to lead our program."

Now in its third year of varsity status, the men's lacrosse program at Misericordia will begin play at Mangelsdorf Field at the Anderson Outdoor Athletic Complex in the spring. "This program has made great strides in the first two years," said Ricardo. "I'm looking forward to the challenge of moving forward and developing a program that can compete in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.

While the history of lacrosse at Misericordia is short, Ricardo thinks the future is bright.

"This is an exciting time for Misericordia lacrosse," said Ricardo. "Our players are enthusiastic and we have a beautiful new complex which provides us with one of the nicest facilities in the region."

During his collegiate playing career, Ricardo helped Cortland to a berth in the NCAA Championships and was a member of two national championship teams at Herkimer Community College where the team set a national record with 59 consecutive wins.

"I had the pleasure of playing for two great coaches and that is part of the reason that I got into coaching," said Ricardo. "I want to apply the things that I learned from my coaches and build a lacrosse tradition at Misericordia."

2003 PAC Men's Lacrosse Tournament

Saturday, May 3, 2003- Final

@ #1 Cabrini 13, #3 Wesley 1

Senior Mike Pape scored four goals and had one assist, and junior Mike Piccoli added two goals and three assists to lead Cabrini College to a 13-1 win over Wesley College to win its third straight men's lacrosse PAC Championship. With the win, the Cavaliers earn their second straight bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Junior goaltender Antonio Masone made 13 saves for Cabrini. Pape was named the game's Most Valuable Player for his performance. It was his first game back after suffering a leg injury on April 9. Cabrini took control of the game in the openinq quarter, scoring six times. Pape started the scoring midway through the period. Kevin Rayer tallied 17 seconds later, and Pape scored his second of the game with 5:16 remaining. Dan Collins, Piccoli and Chris Ogonowski rounded out the scoring in the first quarter.

After the teams split a pair of goals in the second quarter, Cabrini owned the second half, shutting the Wolverines out, while scoring six unanswered goals at the other end.

The win was the 21st straight Conference win for the Cavaliers. Wesley's goal was scored by Greg Prochazka at the end of the second quarter.

This was the fourth straight year the Cavaliers and Wolverines met for the PAC title.

Wednesday, April 30, 2003- Semifinal

@ #1 Cabrini 19, #4 Misericordia 4

Radnor, PA - Justin Gray scored five goals and Paul Archambault and Kevin Rayer added three goals apiece as Cabrini College defeated College Misericordia 19-4 in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) semifinal.

Cabrini (11-3) will host Wesley College (6-6) in the Championship Game on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Wesley defeated Villa Julie College, 9-7 in today's other PAC semifinal.

The Cavaliers held a 4-2 lead after one quarter, then outscored Misericordia 8-1 in the second quarter behind two goals apiece from Gray and Archambault.

Misericordia (5-9) was led by Brandon Fields (two goals, one assist), and Matt Carey (one goal, two assists).

Antonio Masone made five saves for the Cavaliers to notch the win. Chris Brauch made 18 saves for the Cougars in the losing effort.

Cabrini defeated Wesley in their regular season meeting, 14-4.

#3 Wesley 9, @ #2 Villa Julie 7

Chris Hurley scored six goals to power the visiting Wolverines over the host Mustangs in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference semi-final game on Wednesday. Dan Velez tallied three goals and two assists to lead Villa Julie, which finishes the season at 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the PAC.

Villa Julie jumped out first as Velez scored at 10:16 off a smooth feed from Ed Wienecke. Wesley answered with a four-goal run, two scores each from senior attackmen Jason Lynch and Hurley. Brian Bacon fired home an unassisted goal at 0:46 to bring Villa Julie to within 4-2 at the end of the quarter.

VJ put up a pair of second quarter goals -- both in extra-man -- as Wienecke fed Velez and then Velez returned the favor to Wienecke, tying the game at 4-4. Wesley got the final goal of the half, as Hurley notched his third off an assist from Chris Miller, giving his team a 5-4 lead at the break.

The third period was all Villa Julie, as the Mustang defense shut down the Wesley attack. VJ goalie Pat Gill got hot, with six of his overall 13 saves coming in the third. Meanwhile, the Mustang offense put up three unanswered goals. Two Velez goals were sandwiched around a Nate Montanye score, and VJ had the lead, 7-5, and the momentum going into the final period.

But it was all Wesley in the fourth, as they won the pivotal quarter, 4-0. Hurley scored off a feed from Mark Skakle at 12:08 to make it 7-6. Then a Brandon Fohl goal a minute later tied it at 7-7. It was a tension-filled play-off atmosphere over the next three and a half minutes, as both teams looked for an advantage. Hurley broke the ice with a solo goal at 7:28 to give Wesley an 8-7 lead, and the momentum had clearly shifted. Hurley added his sixth and final goal of the day at 6:20, assisted by Greg Prochazka, to account for the final score. The Wolverine defense then dug in as the Mustangs tried to counter over the final six minutes.

In the stats department, Wesley finished with a 31-26 edge in shots, while VJ had the slim 42-41 edge in groundballs. Wolverine goalie Bill Brennan had 18 saves to anchor the defense. Face-offs were almost even, 10-9 in favor of VJ. Both teams controlled two quarters, but Wesley’s four-goal runs in the first and fourth were the difference.

The scenario was, in a way, a carbon copy of last year, as Villa Julie won the regular-season meeting between the two teams and Wesley (both times as #3 seed) defeated VJ (both times the #2 seed) in the post-season semi-final game. In today’s contest, the Wolverines were clearly focused as they rode the emotional wave of playing in memory of their Head Coach, David Reynolds, who passed away several weeks ago.

Wesley (6-6, 6-2) travels to Cabrini on Saturday for the PAC championship game at 2:30 p.m. Cabrini was a 19-4 winner over Misericordia in the day’s other semi-final.

2003 NCAA Tournament- 2nd Round

Saturday, May 10, 2003

@ Salisbury (16-1) 16, Cabrini (13-4) 1

Number one ranked Salisbury jumped to a 10-0 first quarter lead en route to a 16-1 win over visiting Cabrini in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Senior Josh Bergey (4g-2a), sophomore Chris Phillips (3g) and sophomore Justin Smith (2g) each scored twice to fuel SU’s opening run. The Sea Gulls (16-1 overall) advance to Wednesday’s national quarterfinals and will host the winner of Sunday’s Lynchburg-Franklin & Marshall game. Cabrini ends its season with a 13-4 mark.

Salisbury, which scored on 10 of its 22 shots in the opening period, pushed its margin to 11-0 in the opening seconds of the second quarter as Phillips added his third of the game, assisted by face off specialist Andy Murray (1g-1a). Murray enjoyed a near perfect day on face offs, winning 18 of his 19 attempts. Salisbury controlled 19 of 21 draws overall.

Cabrini registered its only marker with 1:43 remaining in the second quarter as freshman Matt Grosse scored unassisted. Murray answered that goal by winning the ensuing face off and scoring unassisted just seven seconds later. Salisbury led 12-1 at halftime.

Bergey added his third and fourth goals of the game in the third quarter. The Gulls closed out the game with two more tallies in the final period, including Mike Ricucci’s second goal of the contest. Sophomore Joe Tamberrino finished with a team-high three assists.

Cabrini’s junior goalie Antonio Masone finished with 18 saves. Salisbury starter Dan Korpon recorded nine saves in 48 minutes. The Sea Gulls finished with a 50-18 advantage in total shots and 67-30 edge in ground balls. The Salisbury defense registered its fourth game of the season in which it allowed one goal or less.

Pennsylvania Athletic Conference champion Cabrini scored four unanswered goals in the final 9:39 of the game to pull away with a 13-8 men's lacrosse victory at Widener, the Middle Atlantic Conference champions, in NCAA Tournament first round action. Cabrini advances to the second round where they will face Salisbury University (15-1) on Satuday.

Widener jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first three goals of the game, and led 6-4 with 10:46 left in the second quarter as the two teams traded goals over a 15-minute span in the two quarters. Cabrini scored the final three goals of the first half to knot the game up at six apiece as the first half came to an end.

Matthew Grosse scored the first goal of the second half, giving Cabrini a 7-6 lead with 6:23 left in the third quarter, and led by as many as two goals as Mike Pape registered his third goal of the game just over a minute later. Kyle Swezey scored his third of four goals for Widener 23 seconds later but Cabrini received a lift when Rory Friel scored his first of three goals with 35 seconds left in the quarter.

Widener pulled back to within a goal when Swezey scored for the fourth time in the game just 18 seconds into the final quarter before Cabrini scored the final four goals of the game.

Cabrini had two players score three times, including Mike Pape and Rory Friel. Matt Campbell and Michael Piccoli had two goals each. Swezey was Widener's only multiple goal scorer with four goals and Jamie Lockard had one goal and one assist.

Pat Carmack made 24 saves in 59 minutes of action for Widener and Antonio Masone made 11 saves for Cabrini.

Widener concludes its season with a final record of 12-4 while Cabrini improves to 13-3 overall.

ECAC Division III Men's Southern Lacrosse Championship

Saturday, May 10, 2003

@ Villa Julie (9-3) 12, Swarthmore (8-7) 11 (VJC ECAC CHAMPS)

Zach Steeg scored the last of his game-high four goals with 0:34 remaining to give Villa Julie a 12-11 win over Swarthmore in the ECAC Southern Region Championship game on Saturday. With the win, the Mustangs finished the season at 9-3, while the Garnet Tide dropped to 8-7.

Steeg put Villa Julie on the board at 10:09 of the opening quarter with an unassisted score. After Swarthmore tied it, Villa ran off the next four goals to take a 5-1 lead. The Mustangs had a seemingly comfortable 8-3 lead at the half, but the Garnet Tide regrouped and answered the challenge, outscoring VJ by an 8-4 margin in the second half.

A Brian Bacon goal at 10:10 of the third period gave Villa Julie their biggest lead of the game at 9-3. The Tide chipped away and cut the deficit to 10-7 at the end of the third. After a Mustang goal by Todd Smith to start the fourth, Swarthmore went on a four-goal run over the next ten minutes to tie the game at 11-11, setting the stage for Steeg’s unassisted game-winner. Steeg was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

Smith scored two goals for VJ and Bacon added two goals and an assist. Chris Murphy and Tom Coughlin scored three goals apiece to lead Swarthmore and Murphy added two assists. Pat Gill turned in a gutsy performance in goal for the Mustangs. Hobbled from a sprained ankle early in the game, he still notched 18 saves, including several from close range.
