GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy defeated Cabrini, 68-61, Saturday night in the finals of the 2007 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Tournament to win their second-straight league crown.
Tournament MVP Michelle Sgrillo (Philadelphia/Cardinal Dougherty), right, scored 13 second-half points including a trio of three-pointers in the victory. The senior finished with 15 points. Teammate Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick) netted a game-high 19 points and Ashley Vandiver (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) chipped in 14 for Gwynedd (25-2).
The first half saw neither team lead by more than four points as the period featured seven lead changes. After Cabrini ran off a 7-0 run to take a 26-23 lead with under four minutes in the stanza, the Griffins responded by closing the half on a 6-0 spurt to lead 29-26 at the break.
The Cavs (19-8) battled ahead for a five-point lead as Katie Walk hit a three-pointer early in the second to cap a 12-2 run. But the Griffins rallied and tied it 42-42 with 11 minutes to go as Beccie Strohecker (Hatboro Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) completed a three-point play, hitting a layup and drawing a foul.
From there Sgrillo hit three of her treys over a four-minute span with her last coming with 4:47 left to give the Griffins a nine-point lead.

PAC Semifinal
Wednesday, February 21, 2007
7:00pm #1 Gwynedd-Mercy College 81, #5 Neumann College 60
GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA - Gwynedd-Mercy will advance to its 10th-straight Pennsylvania Athletic Conference title game as the top-seeded Griffins used four starters in double figures in an 81-60 win over fifth-seeded Neumann Wednesday night.
Gwynedd will take on second-seeded Cabrini, who defeated Alvernia in tonight's other semifinal, this Saturday night at 7 p.m. for the PAC Championship and the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth.
Kristy Cramp led all scorers with 20 points as the sophomore hit six three-pointers on the night. Seniors Jackie Dougherty and Ashley Vandiver each added 15 points apiece while junior Karen Tierney chipped in 12.
Up 25-24, Gwynedd (24-2) used a 9-0 run over a four minute span to end the first half and put them up 10 at the break. The Griffins extended the lead hitting back-to-back treys to open the second half and did not look back, keeping a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
Brittany Whetts led the Knights (18-9) with 16 points and 11 boards.
7:00pm #2 Cabrini College 72, #3 Alvernia College 56
RADNOR, PA - Freshman guard Deana DiAmico scored a team-high 20 points and dished for nine assists as host Cabrini knocked off Alvernia 72-56 in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference playoff game Wednesday night.
With the win, the Cavaliers advance to Saturday's championhip game where they will travel to take on top-seeded Gwynedd Mercy, which topped Neumann College 81-60 in Wednesday's other semi-final. It is the Cavaliers first trip to the PAC championship game since 1999, when the Cavs went 20-8 and reached the NCAA Tournament.
The Cavaliers avenged a 79-75 loss to the Crusaders back on Feb 1. Since then, Cabrini has reeled off six straight wins and clinched first place in the PAC Southern Division. The Cavaliers (19-7 overall, 13-3 PAC regular season), have won with a balanced attack (no player averages in double figures) and some stifling defense. As of this week, Cabrini was ranked 11th overall in scoring defense among NCAA Division III schools.
DiAmico scored 13 points in the first half as the Cavaliers pulled out to a 41-27 lead. DiAmico struck again with a three early in the second half as the Cavs pulled out to a 48-27 lead. But Alvernia, behind the play of Tenay Gaddy (13 points), closed the gap to 14 and stayed within striking distance. The Crusaders actually cut the lead to 56-48 with on a Gaddy free throw with 5:42 to play. But the Cavs, fueled by the play of freshman Kate Walck (10 points) and the inside play of Kayleen Smith (16 points, 11 rebounds) went on an 11-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Junior Casey Kyler played outstanding defense all game and finished with six points and six rebounds.
PAC Quarterfinal
Monday, February 19, 2007
7:00pm #3 Alvernia College 81, #6 Immaculata University 59
Reading, Pa. (Feb. 19, 2007) – Senior guard Lauren Fortna (Lebanon, PA/Lebanon Catholic) scored a game-high 25 points to lead third-seeded Alvernia College to an 81-59 win over #6 Immaculata University Monday evening in quarterfinal action of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Championship at the Physical Education Center.
Alvernia (16-10) will travel to #2 Cabrini for a semifinal match-up with the Cavaliers on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Sophomore Michelle Lutzkanin (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin), who posted an Alvernia-record nine 3s at Eastern last Thursday, scored 22 points, and freshman Janelle Richardson (Manor, DE/Delcastle) reached double figures with 14.
Junior forward Ashley Blevins (York, PA/Central York) led the Crusaders’ effort of the glass with a career-high 13 rebounds. As a team the Crusaders finished one rebound short of their own season-high with 54, and outrebounded the Mighty Macs (15-11) by 11. Senior forward Erin Knarr (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) pulled down five offensive boards and seven on the defensive end for a dozen.
Immaculata struggled shooting the ball from the floor, especially from long range finishing the night 2-of-18 from the arc, both of which came after the game was well in hand for the Crusaders. Senior Meg Legere (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) scored on an assortment of short jumpers and post moves to finish with a team-best 21 points and fellow senior Mary Kate Pawlowski (Exton, PA/Downingtown) reached double digits with 14.
The Macs took an early 10-7 lead hitting four of their first seven attempts, but Fortna knocked down her first of four 3s at 15:27 to knot the score at 10-10. Her second 3 put the hosts up 15-12 and Lutzkanin took over knocking down a pair of shots from long range during a 12-2 spurt that put Alvernia up a dozen, 27-15, with 10:30 left in the first half.
The lead was cut to 10 twice over the next two minutes and Lutzkanin hit her third 3 in the midst of a 9-1 run that put the hosts up 18, 38-20. Immaculata chipped away at the lead closing the half with eight of the last 10 points and hit the break trailing 40-28.
Lutzkanin’s jumper pushed the lead to 14 to start the second half, and the Crusaders built the lead to 22 over the next six minutes. Fortna led the way with five points during the stretch capping the run with a free throw at the 14:32 mark that put the Crusaders up 22 points, 52-30.
Legere answered with a pair of free throws, but back-to-back Lutzkanin 3s capped a 13-5 streak and the Crusaders were up 28 points, 65-37 with 10:14 to play. Immaculata cut that gap to 19 points with under five minutes to play, but got no closer the rest of the way.
Wednesday’s other semifinal will feature #5 Neumann College at top-seeded Gwynedd-Mercy College also at 7:00 p.m. The final will be Saturday at the highest remaining seed.

NCAA Second Round Game
Saturday, March 3, 2007
New York University 72, Gwynedd-Mercy College 60 (at New York University)
NEW YORK - #25 (ESPN/USA Today) Gwynedd-Mercy lost 72-60 to #3 New York University in the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament Saturday night in Manhattan. With the loss, the Griffins end the season 26-3 while the Violets go to 25-2 and advance to next weekend's Sweet 16.
Despite two double-digit deficits in each half, the Griffins rallied to get within five points twice with the latter coming with just over two minutes left in the game
Freshman Jackie Dooley (Cheltenham, Pa./Cheltenham) led the Griffins with 14 points and nine boards off the bench. Junior Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick) added 13 points.
NYU's Jessica McEntee scored 22 of her 34 points in the second half and pulled down 16 boards.
In the first half, scoring was a premium as both teams forced turnovers and played top-notch defense. Dooley's bucket in the paint gave GM a 7-5 lead four minutes into the game. But over the next six minutes, the Griffins didn't hit a field goal and saw their lead go to a 14-7 hole after two McEntee free throws. Later a 9-0 run opened up a 25-12 lead with 4:34 in the half after a three-pointer from Gena Brown. Dougherty's three-pointer and Kristian Woodridge's (Abington, Pa./Abington) 27-footer at the buzzer got the Griffins within 30-20 at the half.
NYU used an 11-2 run midway in the second frame go up by as much as 17 and looked to break the game open. Gwynedd answered with a 15-2 spurt over a five minute span to pull within 63-58 with 2:34 after two Tierney free-throws.
But the tide turned for good when the Griffins were called for an offensive foul after a defensive stop and the Violets' Brown struck again from downtown with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession to go up 66-58 with 1:40 on the clock. NYU then went 6-for-6 from the line the rest of the way to ice the game.

Senior Jackie Dougherty (Roslyn, Pa./Abington) scored 14 points while juniors Karen Tierney (Philadelphia/Kennedy-Kenrick) and Beccie Strohecker (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) chipped in 12 and 11 respectively.
Gwynedd will advance to tomorrow's second round game at 7 p.m. against New York University, who were 84-50 winners over Ursinus in the nightcap.
The Bombers' Erika Steele led all scorers with 22 points, but scored just six in the second half. Sue Kelly added 19 and grabbed 11 boards for Ithaca (16-12).
Gwynedd (26-2) couldn't get in a rhythm at the start of the game and saw Ithaca use an 11-1 run to take a double digit lead (29-19). After a GM timeout, the Griffins fired back outscoring the Bomber's 11-0 over a five minute span. Two Tierney free throws gave GM a 30-29 lead with 4:19 left in the half, but Ithaca closed the period on an 11-6 sprint to lead by four at the half.
The second stanza saw the Bombers generally increase their lead. Three-straight buckets turned a 51-47 edge into their largest lead of the game at 58-47 with 14 minutes left.
Woodridge, Tierney, and Strohecker helped spark the rally combining for 10 points with Woodridge's key three-pointer from the left baseline to knot the game at 60-60 with just under 10 minutes to play.
Sgrillo then helped put the contest away as her two free throws and defensive rebound off a Bomber plus a Woodridge driving layup lifted the Griffins ahead for good, 76-72, with just 2:54 remaining.
Gwynedd shot 65% (13-of-20) and forced 13 turnovers in the second half while outrebounding Ithaca 39-38.

7:00pm #3 Albright College 98, #6 Neumann College 73
In their first appearance in the ECAC Southern Regional Tournament, the Neumann Knights were denied the chance to continue their season. Neumann's 98-73 loss to Albright College ended the Knights best run since the 1987-88 season. Neumann ends the 2006-2007 season 18-10, marking the programs second best season in history.
The Neumann Knights and the Albright Lions had a lot in common going into Wednesday's ECAC Southern Regional in Reading, Pennsylvania. Both teams lost to the eventual conference champions in their conference's semifinal. Both teams were invited to the ECAC Southern Regional Tournament for the first time in their program's history and both teams entered Wednesday's game with similar overall records. Albright, the third seed and host of the tournament, entered into the tournament game 17-9 and Neumann, the sixth seed, came into the game 18-9.
"We played well tonight," stated Head Coach Frank Farnese. "I am proud of the team and what these women did this season. Albright shot well and we struggled a bit off the first tip and just couldn't recover."
Neumann was down 7 in the first two-minutes of play and was unable to catch the Lions from that point forward. Neumann did manage to close the gap to 3 at the 16-minute mark of the first half and received a strong second half scoring effort from Brittany Whetts however, Neumann could not overtake the evening's host.
Neumann's Brittany Whetts, who was named 2006-07 PAC Rookie of the Year earlier in the week, led the Knights. The Philadelphia, Pennsylvania native had a game high 37 points including 27 of her 37 in the second half of play. Teammate Dominique Thompson chipped in with 10-points in the loss.
