2007 PAC Softball Championship

Host/ Site: Arcadia University

First Round

Wednesday, May 2, 2007:

Game #1: #3 Neumann College 4, #6 Alvernia College 2

ASTON, Pa.(May 2) -- In their second consecutive PAC championship softball tournament appearance No. 3 Neumann College topped No. 6 Alvernia College 4-2 on the Bruder Field this afternoon.

Neumann went up 2-0 in the first inning after a two-run homerun by Danielle Hayes put the Knights on top. Audrie Porter's two-out base hit which scored Angela Sebasto, would be the eventual game winning RBI, giving Neumann a 3-0 lead at the completion of the first inning.

Neumann shut down the Crusaders in the top of the second inning due to the effort of Kristen Lawlor, who connected with Jen Goslin, for a double play to end the inning.

Alvernia responded with a run in the top of the third inning, as catcher Colleen Ambrosius scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-1. After a scoreless fifth inning the Crusaders were able to capitalize on a series of errors to close the gap on the Knights 4-2.

Fortunately the Knights' defense was able to rally behind starting pitcher Angela Sebasto who pitched a complete game, 5-hitter, with 10-strikeouts, allowing only one earned run en route to their 11th straight win of the season.

The Knights will continue their season on Saturday, May 5, at Arcadia University in a double elimination tournament for the PAC Championship. Neumann will face No. 2 College Misericordia at 10:00 am

Game #2: #5 Eastern University 7, #4 Cabrini College 3 (10 innings)

RADNOR, Pa (May 2) -- The Eastern University Softball Team twice rallied from deficits to force their PAC quarterfinal game at Cabrini to 10 innings.

A two-run single from Karen Hertzog keyed a four run tenth to allow the fifth seeded Eagles to advance to the PAC Championship tournament this weekend. Ashley Lewis threw ten tough innings to earn the win.

After the Eagles couldn't make anything of a one-out single from Amanda Daveler in the first, the Cavaliers generated an unearned run on a Kristie Sandefur double. Eastern put another runner on in the second, but couldn't generate the tying run. Cabrini's Kerri-Ann McNeil ripped a two-out solo shot to left in the second to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

The Eagle's remained down two until the top of the fourth. Hertzog hit her second home-run of the season to cut the lead in half and spark an Eastern rally. Lewis knocked her second single of the game to left and scored on a Raychel Weis double.

Cabrini retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a manufactured run, and held the lead until the top of the seventh. In a season where the breaks have seemed to go the wrong way for the Eastern squad, the Eagles made their own when aggressive baserunning from Weis allowed her to score on an error from first base.

The game remained tied until the top of the tenth. The Eagles started the tenth with Raychel Weis on second base and the top of the order up. Alissa Brubaker jump-started the rally with a base on balls, and Amanda Daveler moved the runners along with a ground ball to the right side. Cabrini elected to walk Jacey Bray, who was robbed of a home run earlier in the game by a great catch in left, to load the bases. Bray entered the day with three career home-runs agaisnt Cabrini, and the Cavaliers decided to take their chances with Hertzog. Hertzog drove in her 21st and 22nd RBI of the year to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead. Bray and Hertzog then scored on an infield hit and an error from Steph Okeson.

Lewis pitched her way through the tenth without allowing a run to allow the Eagles to advance to the PAC Championship Tournament this weekend.

Game #3: #3 Neumann College 3, #2 College Misericordia 1

Glenside, Pa. - In a rematch of the 2006 PAC Championship game the No. 3 Neumann Knights defeated first round opponent No. 2 College Misericorida 3-1 when the two teams opened the 2007 PAC Championship hosted by Arcadia University in Glenside, Pennsylvania.

After a scoreless first inning Kirsten Norris led off for the Cougars in the bottom of the 2nd and hit a solo homerun off of starting pitcher Angela Sebasto. However, that would be College Misericorida's only run of the day.

Neumann did one better in the third inning. Caitlin Hanrahan hit a single up left center to start things off for the Knights before
freshman Jen Goslin stepped to the plate. With a ball and a strike in the book, Goslin saw her pitch. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania native hit a shot out of the park that scored Hanranhan and gave Neumann the edge they needed.

The 2-1 score would remain on the board through the sixth inning. In the top of the seventh a successful bunt by Sebasto, who advanced to third on two consecutive Cougar errors, opened the door for Kirsten Lawlor who singled up right center to give the Knights some insurance.

Sebasto completed the seven inning victory retiring the side in order in the seventh and earning the Knights their 13th consecutive win of the season.

The Knights will play Eastern University at 4:00 p.m. in their second game of the weekend event.
