2008 PAC Softball Coaches' Pre-Season Poll

PAC Coaches Select Misericordia as Pre-Season Softball Favorite

Aston, Pa. – Misericordia University’s softball team has been selected as the pre-season favorite in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) coaches’ poll. The defending conference champion Cougars received eight of the eleven possible first place votes for a total of 118 points, edging past Neumann College.

“It is an honor to be selected by the PAC Coaches,” said Misericordia head coach Charlotte Slocum. “The PAC has developed into a very competitive league and we’re very proud of our accomplishments. We hope to live up to the expectations and continue our winning tradition.”

Under Coach Slocum, the Cougars have made 12 consecutive championship game appearances.
Neumann College earned a total of 108 points, including three first-place votes, to finish in second place in the poll. Cabrini College (99) finished third, with Alvernia College (81) and Eastern University (77) finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Marywood University
(65), Gwynedd-Mercy College (53), Centenary College (47), Cedar Crest CollegeImmaculata University (32) and Rosemont College (11) rounded out the voting.

The 2008 PAC Championship begins first round play on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. The PAC
Championship is set for Sunday, May 4th.

2008 Softball Players of the Week

April 28, 2008

Player of the Week
Marywood University’s Megan Haikes (Sr., 3B, Scranton, Pa./West Scranton) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 27th. Haikes hit .526 with 10 hits, eight runs, six doubles, ten RBI, and two home runs, including a grand slam, as the Pacers went 4-0 in PAC play for the week. Recording a slugging percentage of 1.158 and an on-base percentage of .625, Haikes assisted the Pacers in clinching their first playoff appearance in 12 years.

Nicole DelGuerico, Gwynedd-Mercy College (Fr., IF, Riegelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) hit .583 with seven hits, eight runs, one double and five RBI as the Griffins went 2-0 in PAC play for the week.

Jennifer Goslin, Neumann College (So., 1B, Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) hit .500 with seven hits, four runs, one triple, two home runs and eight RBI as the Knights went 3-1 in PAC play for the week.

Pitcher of the Week
Neumann College’s Angela Sebasto (Jr., P, Trenton, NJ/McCorriston) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 27th. Sebasto pitched 18 innings, including three shutouts, and recorded 24 strikeouts. Sebasto held opponents to a .119 batting average without allowing any runs, helping the Knights go 3-1 in PAC play for the week.

Susan Miller, Gwynedd-Mercy College (Fr., P, Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) recorded a 0.00 ERA this week, notching 18 strikeouts, including 10 in a perfect game against Rosemont College, and holding opponents to a .056 batting average as the Griffins went 2-0 in PAC play for the week.  

Katherine Lucenti, Misericordia University (So., P, Montrose Lake, Pa./Elk Lake) recorded a 0.00 ERA, notching 12 strikeouts and allowing zero earned runs as the Cougars went 4-0 in PAC play for the week.

Misericordia University’s Kristen Norris (Sr., 1B, Lake Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John Paul XXIII) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending April 20th. Norris hit .588 with 10 hits, eight runs, five doubles, two home runs and six RBI. Recording a slugging percentage of 1.235, Norris led the team to three sweeps of conference opponents as the Cougars went 6-0 in PAC play for the week.

Honor Roll

Megan Dunne, Centenary College (Jr., OF/DP, Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) hit .556 with 10 hits, eight runs and ten RBI as the Lady Cyclones went 3-3 in PAC play for the week.

Jackie Rhoads, Alvernia College (Sr., 2B, Dillsburg, Pa./Northern York) hit .368 with seven hits, six runs, three doubles and one RBI as the Crusaders went 2-2 in PAC play for the week.

Pitcher of the Week
Eastern University’s Raychel Weis (Jr., P, Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 20th. Weis pitched 21 innings, including one shutout, recording 17 strikeouts. Weis held opponents to a .187 batting average, allowing only four runs,  and helping the Eagles go 5-1 in PAC play for the week.

Honor Roll
Michele Jensen, Alvernia College (Fr., P, Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley) recorded a 1.000 ERA, notching 13 strikeouts and giving up five runs as the Crusaders went 2-2 in PAC play for the week.

Katie Eiden, Misericordia University (So., Scranton, Pa./Scranton) recorded a 0.00 ERA this week, recording seven strikeouts in 12 innings pitched, and holding opponents to a .111 batting average.

Player of the Week
Alvernia College’s Michele Kassab (Fr., IF, Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending April 13th. Kassab hit .611 with six runs, 11 hits, four doubles, 11 RBI and two home runs. Recording a slugging percentage of 1.167, Kassab improved her hitting streak to 14 straight games as the Crusaders went 4-0 in PAC play for the week.

Neumann College’s Jennifer Goslin (So., 1B, Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Player of the Week for the week ending April 13th. Goslin hit .476 with seven runs, 10 hits, two doubles, nine RBI and four home runs. Recording a slugging percentage of 1.143, Goslin had three walks and an on-base percentage of .542.

Pitcher of the Week
Neumann College’s Angela Sebasto (Jr., P, Trenton, NJ/McCorriston) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 13th. Sebasto pitched 22.2 innings, including one shutout and recording one save. Sebasto held opponents to a .138 batting average, recording 28 strikeouts and allowing only four runs, helping the Knights go 5-1 in PAC play for the week.

Honor Roll
Emily Williams, Alvernia College (Jr., P, Minersville, Pa./BVM), recorded an ERA of 1.17, notched 14 strikeouts and gave up just three runs in 18 innings, holding her opponents to a .273 batting average as the Crusaders went 4-0 in PAC play for the week.

Player of the Week
Alvernia College’s Rhiannon Sorrentino (Fr., 3B, Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending April 6th. Sorrentino hit .611 with seven runs, 11 hits, three doubles, nine RBI. In a game versus Wesley, Sorrentino notched three triples, one shy of the NCAA record, as the Crusaders went 4-0 (0-0 PAC) for the week.

Honor Roll
Lauren Cassoff, Centenary College (Sr., 3B, Manhawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), batted .643 at the plate, including three runs, nine hits, two doubles, four RBI and one home run as the Lady Cyclones went 1-1 in PAC play.

Erika Cook, Marywood University (Jr., 2B, Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), batted .625 at the plate, including three runs, five hits, three doubles, two RBI and one home run as the Pacers went 0-2 in PAC play.

Pitcher of the Week

Centenary College’s Sarah Olsen (Fr., Pitcher, Hopatcong, NJ/Pope John XXIII) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 6th. Olsen notched 16 strikeouts in 11.1 innings, including a season-high 12 strikeouts in a one-hit shut-out of Cabrini College. With an ERA of 3.09, Olsen held opponents to a .186 batting average, leading the Lady Cyclone’s to their first conference win of the season.

Cedar Crest College’s Allison Holland (Jr., Pitcher, Mercerburg, Pa./James Buchanan) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 6th. Holland notched 20 strikeouts in 10 consecutive innings, leading the Falcons to back-to-back victories. Holland held opponents to a .118 batting average, allowing four hits and zero runs in a 2-0 PAC week.

Neumann College’s Jennifer Goslin (So., 1B, Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 30th. Goslin hit .750 with 11 hits, 7 runs, one double, five home runs and 15 RBI. Goslin had a slugging percentage of 1.750 and an on-base percentage of .818 as the Knights went 3-1 in PAC play.

Hollie Sarnak, Misericordia University (Fr., IF, Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke), batted .714, including 11 runs, 15 hits, three doubles and 10 RBI as the Cougars went 4-0 in PAC play.
Carol Mastrosante, Immaculata University (So., C, Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), batted .714, including five runs, three doubles, two triples, and six RBI as the Mighty Macs went 3-1 in PAC play.

Pitcher of the Week
Immaculata University’s Melissa Fetter (Jr., Pitcher, Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O’Hara) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 30th. Fetter notched 13 strikeouts in 17 innings, leading the team to their first conference win of the season against Cabrini College. Fetter also pitched a complete game shutout against Rosemont College, helping the Mighty Macs go 3-1 in PAC play for the week.

Honor Roll
Katherine Lucenti, Misericordia University (So., Pitcher, Montrose, Pa./Elk Lake), recorded a 3.27 ERA, notched 10 strikeouts and pitched two complete games to help the Cougars go 4-0 in PAC play.

Player of the Week
Marywood University’s Erika Cook (Jr., 2B, Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing Valley) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 23rd. Cook hit .615 with five runs, seven hits, one double, four RBIs, one walk, and one stolen base. Cook notched 10 put outs and 11 assists, with a fielding percentage of 1.000, helping the team go 3-1 (0-0 PAC) for the week.

Honor Roll
Michelle Kassab, Alvernia College (Fr., OF, Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes), batted .667 at the plate, including three runs, four hits, two triples, four RBIs, and two stolen bases as the Crusaders went 2-0 (0-0 PAC) for the week

Jayme DiLeonardo, Gwynedd-Mercy College (Sr., OF, Southampton, NJ/Lenape) went 4-for-6, with five runs, three RBIs, a three-run home run and four stolen bases as the Griffin’s went 2-0 (0-0 PAC) for the week.

Cedar Crest College’s Allison Holland (Jr., Pitcher, Mercerburg, Pa./James Buchanan) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 23rd. Holland notched 14 strikeouts in 14 consecutive innings, leading the Falcons to back-to-back victories. With an ERA of 1.29. Holland held opponents to a .180 batting average, allowing three runs in a 2-0 (0-0 PAC) week.

Emily Williams, Alvernia College (So., Pitcher, Minersville, Pa./Nativity BVM), recorded 11 strikeouts after entering in relief against PSU-Berks, and held opponents to a .118 batting average.

March 17, 2008

Player of the Week
Gwynedd-Mercy College’s Jayme DiLeonardo (Sr., OF, Southampton, NJ/Lenape) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Player of the Week for the week ending March 16th. DiLeonardo hit .529 (9-for-17), with eight runs, one home run, two triples, four walks, ten stolen bases, and six RBIs, helping the Griffins go 4-1 (2-0 PAC) to start the season.

Honor Roll
Erika Cook, Marywood University (Jr., 2B, Wyalusing, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), batted .577 at the plate, including two home runs, three doubles, five stolen bases, and six RBIs.

Pitcher of the Week
Neumann College’s Angela Sebasto (Jr., Pitcher, Trenton, NJ/McCorriston) was named the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Softball Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 16th. Sebasto notched 61 strikeouts in 39.2 innings, with an ERA of 4.06. Sebasto pitched two no-hitters to start the season, including a 33-0 routing of Rosemont College in PAC play.

Michelle Jensen, Alvernia College (Fr., Pitcher, Holland, NJ/Delaware Valley), recorded an ERA of 1.68, notched 17 strikeouts and had a 4-1 start to the season.

The Neumann College Softball team entered the record books on Thursday afternoon, becoming the first team in the school’s history to win an NCAA Tournament game.

The seventh-seeded Knights defeated #2 Christopher Newport 5-2 in the regional tournament, improving to 28-12 on the season.  PAC Player of the Year, Angela Sebasto, pitched a complete game (seven innings), keeping the Captains scoreless through four innings, allowing only two runs on seven hits.

The Knights face third-seeded Methodist College (35-10) on Friday, May 9, 2008 at 2:00 p.m.
